How important is it to be fit in today’s world of seafaring?
Although automation has overtaken us and seafaring has entered the 21st century, strength and flexibility is still
called for whether it is for lifeboat drill, fire fighting or even routine maintenance work.
Maritime safety depends on officers and crews being able to play their part as a team member, this being one of the
main reasons for all seafarers to attain certain levels of fitness and wellbeing.
The International Maritime Organisation recently agreed a set of minimum physical requirements for seafarers and
these will be incorporated into examination arrangements to be used by Approved Doctors.
The Maritime & Coastguard Agency is currently reviewing their procedures to bring them in line with current IMO
recommendations.
Since 1996 Ships’ Crews Medical Services Limited has offered ship-owners a full medical pre-employment screening
programme to ensure all seafarers employed meet the highest medical criteria.
This programme is operated in conjunction with MCA approved Doctors situated strategically around the United
Kingdom & Eire with an approved Doctors in Vancouver, Canada and Cape Town, South Africa. All Doctors have
extensive experience in the Maritime Industry and are also approved by the Norwegian & Dutch Maritime Agencies.
